Using Silos and Themes on Your AdSense Site

Website Design No Comments »

Using themes and silo structure on your AdSense websites can be very effective. Here is a quick walk-thorugh on how to use a Silo structure.

There are several options for setting up your site. If you do not have a website builder software my personal favorite is XSitePro. XSitePro is simple to use and very effective which is the perfect combo for building AdSense sites.

If you want to go the free route you can use a Wordpress blog, which can be very effective also but has a big learning curve in order to get everything SEO friendly.

Lastly, if you already have a website builder like Frontpage or Dreamweaver, check out TemplateADay which sends you a free template every single day which you can use free of charge to help make you site more professional looking.

When setting up your site you want to divide your site into several categories, which you should already have determined from organizing your keywords. You want to link your homepage to each of your category pages. Then each category page should link to all of the article pages within that category. This will help “theme” your site and have a dramatic effect on your search engine rankings.

The concept of “Theme” navigation is a relatively new concept but incredibly powerful. If you would like to read more about it check out The Master Plan which is the first book to really go in depth and teach you how to use themes in your site.

Let’s try to explain this in more detail to help clear things up.

If I was making a site about golf, I might divide it up into 3 categories; golf clubs, golf balls, and golf shoes. My homepage would link to each category page…golf clubs, golf balls and golf shoes. Then I would link from the golf clubs page to each of my article pages about golf clubs. This way all the golf club pages are linking to other golf club pages and I would be establishing a strong golf club theme within those pages.

Make more sense? Here’s a diagram…

No golf club pages would link to any other pages unless it makes sense. I could also link back to the homepage from each page also to make my site more visitor friendly.

**TIP** Never link to your homepage with the the anchor text of “Home”. Your home page is not about “home” so you wouldn’t want the search engines to think that. Instead link to your homepage with your main keyword that you are targeting with your home page. In this example I would link to my homepage with the anchor text “Golf”. It’s about golf so that is what I want the SE’s to know it about.

Hopefully that helps you fully understand a basic overview of using a silo structure and theme your website
